CULT EUROPEAN SINGER-SONGWRITER SET FOR AMERICANA INSPIRED UK DEBUT
A fixture on the Dutch and Belgian underground music scenes for over a decade, Bruce Bherman will release his first single in the UK on May 14th 2012.
‘Big Sized’ is taken from Bherman’s forthcoming Americana–infused E.P., ‘Untagged’, which is due for release on the same day via the AKR Recordings label.
Having released six studio albums since his 1999 debut ‘The Corridor’, Bherman travelled to Nashville, TN, to work on tracks for his forthcoming album ‘Untagged Friends’ with his friend Mark Nevers, the producer famed for his work with the likes Vic Chesnutt, The Silver Jews and Bonnie Prince Billy.
The recording of the E.P. tracks ‘Radio Girl’, ‘I’ll Wait For You In Line’ and new single ‘Big Sized’ took place at Nevers’ Beech House Studios, with Tony Crow, Matthew Swanson, William Tyler and Kurt Wagner of Americana band Lambchop providing the backbone of Bherman’s band for the sessions.
The new tracks are a departure from Bherman’s previous Eno-influenced albums ‘Two Boys’ (2006) and ‘Attitudes’ (2007), but Bherman has always been an artist with eclectic taste.
Bherman says, who is of British/Flemish descent said, “My father was a jazz pianist and introduced me to the genius of Thelonious Monk and Art Tatum,” “There were plenty of other legends on rotation – my mother loved Jim Reeves, Nat King Cole and Johnny Cash, while my sister was obsessed with the French pop stars of the day.
Bherman would later be inspired by the British Folk scene, with Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, Tim Buckley and John Martyn (the latter of whom Bruce once lived with at his home in Hastings) never far from the record player, as he confesses, “I loved those artists. I’d listen to their records all the time and soaked it all up.”
Bruce Bherman will shortly announce a series of UK dates to support the release of ‘Big Sized’ single, E.P and new album.
