HEADLINE TOUR DATES AND NEW SINGLE FROM JOHN LENNON MCCULLAGH

John Lennon McCullagh, Doncaster’s highly acclaimed teenage troubadour, has spent the past year making a name for himself as one of the UK’s brightest songwriting talents. On 27th February, 2014, the sixteen year-old will begin his first headline tour of the UK, before releasing his new single ‘Towerland Lullaby’ on 24th March.

Produced by Alabama 3, McCullagh says of Towerland Lullaby, “I got the name when driving about in Liverpool and I saw a street called "Towerland Street". I thought that was a cool name for a song, but I can't remember where the Lullaby bit came from.” McCullagh adds, “The song isn’t about anything in particular. I had a few of the verses written before I even thought about the song, so it was a bit of a poem, really. It's about anything you want it to be; there's no message as such behind it.”

McCullagh’s UK tour kicks-off at Sheffield’s O2 Academy 2 on February 27th, before playing dates in Leeds, York, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Gourock, Banbury, London and Stoke. In April, McCullagh will embark on his first tour of Germany in April.

Influenced by Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits, McCullagh has been playing guitar and writing his own songs since he was twelve. His latent talent for his beloved six-string was soon followed by mastery of the harmonica, and when McCullagh was just fifteen years-old he became one of the first signings to music industry legend Alan McGee’s new record label, 359 Music.

McCullagh’s debut album, North South Divide, was produced in a day and released in October 2013, prompting Billy Bragg to declare it a “good week for new angry music”. The album received critical acclaim from the UK’s national press, as McCullagh performed live sessions and achieved airplay from stations such as XFM, BBC 6Music, Absolute Radio and BBC Radio 2. As a direct result, North South Divide will now be released in Japan on major label JVC. Alan McGee said of his new protégé, “John is an amazing talent for such a young kid. To be honest, he’s just a natural.”

McCullagh has also spent the past twelve months making his mark on the UK’s live circuit, opening for artists such as The Strypes, Richard Hawley, The Enemy, Babyshambles and Revered & The Makers. His raw ability belies his age, leaving audiences captivated by the profound maturity in his performances. Richard Hawley said, “John is a real talent, I'd happily take him on tour with me in the future. The real deal.", while The Strypes’ lead guitarist Josh McClorey said of McCullagh, “Really fantastic to see somebody playing primal music with such energy and enthusiasm - watch this space!"
