MAZ O’CONNOR: NEW SINGLE, NEW SOUND AND ‘NEW MOON TOUR’ DATES

The highly acclaimed singer-songwriter Maz O’Connor has announced plans to release a brand new single ‘Skin’ on Friday, 30th September, and play a run of UK tour dates throughout November.

'Skin' is the first glimpse of the new music O’Connor has been making, a stepping stone towards a new phase of her career, untethered to any genre.

O’Connor’s 2012 debut album ‘Upon A Stranger Shore’ and its 2014 follow-up ‘This Willowed Light’ saw the London-based singer songwriter making her mark on the British folk scene.

However, since the release of her latest album 'The Longing Kind' in February of this year O’Connor has been writing and working with producer Nosaappollo (Vanessa White, Olly Murs) to develop a sound which fully represents her eclectic musical influences and ambitions.

O’Connor said, “I'm 25 and living in one of the world's most diverse cities. I listen to everything. Why would I put limitations on my music? It's taken me a while to figure out what kind of artist I am and want to be, but now I'm finally making music which feels like me, and I can't wait to share it.”

It was the death of David Bowie earlier this year which sparked O’Connor’s new drive of creativity. She said, "Bowie's death reminded us that artists should have the courage to be authentically themselves. His subversion of the status quo was much bigger than music; it's about offering an alternative to the establishment."

While broadening her musical horizons, O’Connor isn’t turning her back on the genre that has brought success. “Folk songs will always be in my bones,” she said, “but so is Bowie, so is Joni, so is Nina Simone. I'm a musician, and for too long I've limited myself to being a folk musician.”

One thing that remains unchanged, however, is O'Connor's skill in creating something intensely personal which taps into a collectively felt experience.

Talking about her new single, O’Connor said, “‘Skin’ wasn't easy to write, but I needed to write honestly about what it's like to be a young woman in this society. Our bodies are scrutinised and we're under pressure every day to be perfect. And it's hard to be a young person in this country. I hope the song will offer a catharsis to people.”

Preceded by O’Connor’s appearance at the Musicport Festival in Whitby on 23rd October, ‘The New Moon Tour’ begins on 2nd November at Liverpool’s Philharmonic and ends on 11th November at The Pound in Corsham.

O’Connor will also introduce her new band at these live dates, featuring John Parker of Nizlopi on bass and Tom Moore of Moore Moss Rutter/False lights on strings and drums.
