From the West End via Broadway to sold-out arenas in his native Scandinavia, Peter Jöback has built an impressive career and a dedicated fan base.

  • Notes to editor:

Peter Jöback was the first European actor to mantle the prestigious role as the Phantom of The Opera on Broadway since the original cast. Peter, who arrived on Broadway after a successful run as the Phantom in London’s West End, is one of four actors in the world having played the role on both sides of the Atlantic with huge success. He also performed the Phantom’s title song at the 67th Annual Tony Awards ceremony in honor of the Phantom’s 25th anniversary on Broadway.

Returning to Sweden after his Broadway session last year, Peter did a sold-out arena tour with his concept “I Love Musicals”, featuring Stockholm Sinfonietta and guest performers from Broadway and the West End such as Norm Lewis and Scarlett Strallen. Peter started this hugely successful and exclusive concept already 2012 and the 2013 version was an even bigger success. In December 2013, Peter opened as Sweeney Todd in a highly praised production of the play at the Stockholm City Theatre and his run was completely sold-out.

Peter had a grand year in 2012, too. After starting the year off by performing at the 25th anniversary celebration of “The Phantom of the Opera” at London’s Royal Albert Hall, he played the Phantom for six months to sold-out houses. Directly following his run at the West End, Peter launched his arena concept “I Love Musicals” in Scandinavia to rave reviews. Christmas saw the release of Peter’s Christmas-themed book, which was based on his multiplatinum Christmas album. The album has received accolades such as “the ultimate Christmas album of all time”, and it still enters the charts before the holidays every year, a decade after it was released. It is the best-selling Christmas album of all time in Sweden.

Peter arrived on Broadway at the height of a long and successful career in Scandinavia, where he is one of the most prolific and well-respected artists. His albums have sold over 1 million copies, including the bestselling Swedish albums of 2006 and 2008, and he has been nominated for three Swedish Grammy Awards. Peter’s music transcends genres and he records both in English and Swedish. One of his most recent albums, “La Vie, L’Amour, La Mort”, consists of original material and classic French chansons, while its predecessor, “East Side Stories”, is a personal selection of modern classics. The album was recorded in Woodstock and includes duets with Sia Furler and iconic singer Kate Pierson of the B-52’s. Peter’s versatility is also apparent in his vibrant stage presence. In addition to performing in musicals, he has done countless tours in great variety of constellations – from intimate shows with an acoustic trio and concerts with a full band to extravagant performances with symphonic orchestras.

Always seeking new challenges, Peter has moved successfully between musical genres on stage and on record, and transitioned seamlessly into film and television. Peter has been awarded two Swedish Tony Awards; for creating Robert in Bjorn Ulvaeus’ and Benny Andersson’s original musical “Kristina” and for playing the Emcee in “Cabaret”. Two of Peter’s TV specials have been nominated for the Silver Rose at the Rose d’Or Global Entertainment Television Festival in Montreux, including the mini-series “With the heart at stake”, which was conceptualized and produced by Peter. The album “La Vie, L’Amour, La Mort” was accompanied by a 30-minute film, which showed off Peter’s considerable acting skills. As with all of his shows and TV productions, Peter was at the helm of the creative production of the film. Peter also performed at the concert before Crown Princess Victoria’s wedding 2010 and in June this year Peter performed at the royal wedding of H.R.H. Princess Madeleine of Sweden and Mr. Chris O’Neill, in a ceremony which was broadcast live on many European and international networks.

Peter returned to Sweden in September to follow up the 2012 success with I Love Musicals with another arena tour and a studio album with the same name.

"I Love Musicals - The Album" was released mid-September and went straight to #2 on the Swedish album chart. Recorded in Benny Andersson’s studio with Stockholm Sinfonietta, conductor David White and guest appearances by Ma-Anne Dionisio and Katy Treharne. A grand album with fifteen songs from various musicals such as; The Phantom of the Opera, Cabarét, Jesus Christ Superstar, Miss Saigon and Sound of Music. Stockholm Sinfonietta is ranked as one of the world's leading chamber orchestras with musicians from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Royal Opera

Peter just made his Japanese debut as a guest star in the concert “Musical meets Symphony” in with Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. In connection with this Sony Music Japan released his album “I Love Musicals” which entered at No. 7 in the Japanese charts.
